Gary's Story
Gary Neiwand proved himself one of the most enduring and dynamic track cyclists ever produced by Australia. A four-time Olympian, Neiwand achieved the rare feat of winning Olympic medals 12 years apart – an accomplishment considered even more remarkable in a power endeavour such as track cycling. The Victorian won medals in three of the four Olympics he participated in: a 1988 bronze in the sprint, a silver in 1992 in the sprint, and bronze in the team sprint and a silver in the kierin in 2000. He also narrowly missed a medal at Atlanta in 1996, placing fourth in his pet event, the sprint. He also enjoyed success at both the world championships and Commonwealth Games.
