Gary's Story

Gary Honey won a silver medal in the men’s long jump behind American Carl Lewis, the athletics legend who won the first of his four consecutive long jump gold medals in Los Angeles. Honey was a jumper of both class and consistency. His longest jump in the competition of 8.24 metres was a personal best, a distance also achieved by the bronze medallist, Giovanni Evangelisti of Italy. But Honey’s second best recorded jump was better than the Italian’s, winning him the silver medal. Honey also competed at the Moscow 1980 Olympics and won Commonwealth Games gold medals in 1982 and 1986.
