Gary's Story

1937 – 1978

In the 100m freestyle at Melbourne 1956 Gary Chapman was part of the first Australian clean sweep of medals in any Olympic event. He finished third behind Jon Henricks and John Devitt. Although he was suited to distances longer than 100m, Chapman was somewhat surprisingly not selected in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay team that won the gold medal in the event that had been last won an Australasian squad at Stockholm 1912. At the Empire and Commonwealth Games, Chapman won two gold medals and one silver at Vancouver 1954, and a further gold and silver medal at Cardiff 1958.
