Gael's Story
Gael Martin won the bronze medal in the women’s shotput in 1984, recording a distance of 19.19 metres. While she placed third, Martin’s medal was a historic first for Australian athletics – no man or woman had ever won a throwing event at the Olympics before. Martin was one of the premier field athletes in Australia for more than a decade, competing in both shotput and discus at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. She enjoyed success at the Commonwealth Games and won more than 60 state and national titles during her career, as well as setting a number of long-standing records.
