Elspeth's Story
1957 -
Elspeth Clement was among the finest defenders to represent Australia. The highlight of her career came in Seoul when she was a member of the women’s team that won Australia’s first hockey gold medal. Clement had made her Olympic debut four years earlier in Los Angeles, when Australia finished an unlucky fourth. In Seoul, her strength and consistency at full-back was vital to Australia’s success. This was especially true in the final, where Clement and the other defenders shut out the lively South Koreans to ensure the 2-0 victory. During the Olympic tournament Clement became the first woman to represent Australia in 100 international matches.
