About Edwina
Edwina ‘Eddie’ Bone was born in Orange, in Central West NSW. She spent two years in Hockey Australia’s women’s development program in Canberra. She progressed through the junior ranks with the Canberra Strikers alongside fellow Olympian Anna Flanagan, before she broke through to the senior squad when she moved to Perth in 2013.
In her international debut year, she won gold at the 2013 Oceania Cup in New Zealand and silver at the 2013 World League Finals in Argentina.
The defender established herself as a regular in the team after winning gold at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and silver at the World Cup in the Netherlands and Champions Trophy in Argentina.
She made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016 as a defender for the Australian women’s hockey team.
The Aussies had a tough start to their 2016 Olympic campaign, going down 2-1 against both Great Britain and the USA in their opening two pool matches. Despite this disappointment, the side went on to secure three consecutive wins against India, Argentina and Japan, leaving them to face Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the quarter final. Hopes of a medal finish were dashed as the Aussies went down 4-2 to the Kiwis, leaving the ladies to finish in 6th place.
Unfortunately, her 2017 season was disrupted due to an injury, however, she came back strong in 2018 winning a silver medal alongside her teammates at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Edwina made her second Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020, with the seasoned defender contributing to a backline that only conceded two goals in six matches. In a similar fashion to Rio, Australia fell short of medal contention losing a tense match against India 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
