Edwin's Story
1899 – 1971
Edwin ‘Slip’ Carr, from Sydney, was Australia’s flagbearer at Paris 1924 prior to competing on the athletics track. He was the captain of the athletic team. These were to become the ‘Chariots of Fire’ Olympics. Once competition began, Carr made the semi-finals in both the 100 and 200 metres, just missing qualifying for the final in both events.
Returning to Australia, he highlighted the need for cinder tracks to enable athletes to be better prepared when travelling overseas to compete. Carr was a dual international, having played four rugby union Tests for the Wallabies in the early 1920s. He gave away rugby to concentrate on athletics. His son, Edwin Jr., competed in athletics at Helsinki 1952. He had previously served in World War I.
