Duop's Story
Born in South Sudan, Duop Reath moved to Brisbane at age 9 with his family before eventually settling in the suburbs of Perth.
After a late start in basketball, Duop’s height and athleticism quickly made him a strong prospect, which earned an offer to play US college basketball at Lee College in Texas. In his sophomore season Duop averaged 14.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, with some outstanding performances earning a transfer to collegiate powerhouse Louisiana State University (LSU) for his junior season.
After two strong seasons at LSU, including appearances as the team's regular starting centre in his senior year, Duop declared for the 2018 NBA draft and went undrafted. Shortly after he played on the Dallas Mavericks' summer league roster before signing a three-year contract with Serbian side FMP.
Once he completed his second season for FMP, Duop made the ambitious move across Belgrade to ink a deal with Euroleague side KK Crvena zvezda.
In his first season at KK Crvena zvezda Duop, in the 2021 Olympic year, he helped steer his side to a championship in the Serbian domestic league and the ABA League.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Duop and the Boomers lifted Australia to the bronze medal, defeating Slovenia in the bronze medal match 107-93.
He helped achieved our nation's first men's basketball Olympic medal since Australia made its men's basketball Olympic debut in 1956.
Duop played spot minutes in four of the six matches, bringing valuable energy and hustle to the team's campaign.
After the Olympics Duop returned to Australia to play in the NBL for the Illawarra Hawks.
In 30 games that season, he averaged 15.5 points, 7.1 rebounds per game and made 43.8 per cent of his three-pointers. The Hawks reached the NBL semi-finals.
In 2022, Duop played with the Phoenix Suns summer league squad, but in his first start he suffered an ankle injury after scoring 13 points. Just like that, his summer was over.
Three months later, he found himself in China, playing for the Qingdao Eagles.
In 39 games, Duop averaged 18.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. When that season was over, he joined Al Riyadi Beirut of the West Asia Super League. In just 10 games there, he averaged 21.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
Then it was back to the US for his fourth summer league, this time with the Portland Trail Blazers. But this time he found himself an NBA home, averaging 13 points and 7.4 rebounds when called upon to fill a role and he impressed to sign a new three-year contract with the Blazers in February 2024.
Duop was a key centre for the Boomers at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, held in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, where he averaged 8.6 points and 2.4 rebounds. Although the Boomers failed to advance to the elimination rounds, they did secure a berth at the Paris Olympics, with Duop playing in five games.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics Duop's number was called for the quarter-finals clash against Nikola Jokic and Serbia. He scored nine points and four rebounds in 22 minutes as the Serbians won 95-90 in overtime, knocking Australia out of the tournament.
Away from the basketball court, Duop’s favourite pastime is chess, which he first took up at the age of three.
