Doris's Story
1912 – 1999
In competing in the high jump at Berlin 1936, Doris Carter from Victoria was the first Australian woman to compete in an Olympic field event. Highly fancied as a medal contender going into Berlin, she was hampered by an ankle injury and finished equal sixth. Also equal sixth with Carter was Fanny Blankers-Koen of Holland.
At London 1948, Blankers-Koen was the star of the Olympics by winning four gold medal. Finishing fourth in the event was a German called Dora Ratjen. Two decades later, Ratjen revealed that ‘she’ was a man. At Melbourne 1956, Doris Carter was one of the Assistant Managers of the Australian Team.
