Desmond's Story
1986 -
Desmond ‘Des’ Abbott won a bronze medal for Australia in men’s hockey in 2008. From the Northern Territory, the indigenous striker enjoyed an outstanding Olympic tournament. He tied with Eddie Ockenden for the team’s leading scorer with six goals – a tally bettered by only two other players in the tournament. Abbott’s haul included a hat-trick in the Kookaburras’ first game against Canada. In the semi-final, he scored in the first minute as Australia lost to Spain 3-2. Abbott scored again in the bronze medal final as the Kookaburras defeated the Netherlands 6-2.
