Deborah's Story
1963 -
Queenslander Debbie Bowman was the captain of the women’s team in Seoul that won Australia it’s first hockey gold medal. In fact, the success was Australia’s first gold medal in any team sport at the Olympics. Bowman was only 22 in Seoul, but her leadership skills and scoring ability made her a pivotal player for Australia. In the final against South Korea, Bowman scored the first goal, firing in a penalty early in the second half to give Australia the lead. A second goal was added minutes later by Lee Capes to secure a historic 2-0 victory. Bowman returned to the Games in Barcelona (playing under her married name of Sullivan), where the team finished fifth. She has remained active in the sport as a coach.
