David's Story
David Forbes and John Anderson won the gold medal in Star class sailing at Munich 1972. On the same day, John Cuneo, John Shaw and Anderson’s twin, Tom, won another gold medal in the Dragons. Twins winning gold medals on the same day in different events is a unique occurrence at the Olympic Games.
Forbes and Richard Williamson finished sixth in the Stars at Mexico City 1968. At Montreal 1976, Forbes, John Anderson and Denis O’Neil finished eleventh in Solings. Forbes had a long and varied career in Australian and international sailing world, including America’s and Admiral’s Cups campaigns. He was the 5.5-metre world champion in 1970 and for his achievements at Munich became the Australian Yachtsman of the Year for 1972-73. In 1988, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
