David's Story
Midfielder David Carney was 24 at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He was one of three overage players competing for Australia (with Archie Thompson and Jade North). Carney, who had moved to England to play with Everton at the age of 16, played with Sydney FC from 2005-2007. Although he returned to the UK to play for Sheffield United in 2007, Carney put his country first and chose to play for Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games despite the pressures of preparing for a new season with his UK club. The Australians finished 11th in Beijing.
