Damien's Story
Having competed at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in 2009 and the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore a year later, Damien Birkinhead would make his Olympic debut in Rio.
He got there after throwing a personal best distance of 21.21 metres to easily pass the Olympic qualifying standard (20.50m) and move to second on the Australian all-time list in Hobart in February, 2016. Birkinhead’s best is now just five centimetres shy of the Australian Record, held by his coach and dual Olympian Scott Martin.
At Rio 2016, Birkenhead qualified for the finals eventually finishing 10th with a best throw of 20.45m.
