Craig's Story
1976 -
Craig Lewis won a silver medal for Australia in baseball in 2004. From New South Wales, Lewis had a remarkable baseball career. The right-hand pitcher was rated so highly that he won a contract with the New York Yankees. However, a blood clot injury on his pitching arm railroaded his rise through pro ranks. To correct the injury, Lewis underwent surgery which involved him losing a rib. He re-established his professional career, playing primarily as a hitter. In Athens he pitched in two games for Australia, being awarded the win against the Netherlands. He also played in the field, demonstrating his rare versatility. The silver remains Australia’s only baseball medal from the Olympics.
