About Connor
Connor Metcalfe began his playing career as part of a scholarship for Melbourne City FC. He would play for City in their NPL Victoria 2 side for three years, before being called to the senior squad in 2017.
At 17-years-old, the Newcastle born talent was signed on a one-year deal, which was subsequently extended.
The midfielder made his senior debut for Melbourne in the A-League in January 2018, against the Central Coast Mariners, where his last0ditch cameo helped the team secure a 2-2 draw.
Metcalfe would compete as part of the Australian Under-20’s team that competed at the 2018 AFC U-19 Championships in Indonesia. Where, after finishing in the top half of Group C, would bow out to eventually champions Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals, where they were defeated 3-1.
He would then enjoy a strong 2020/21 season, becoming a staple of the 2021 A-League premiership champions Melbourne City. His efforts were recognised with two individual accolades, winning the Harry Kewell medal (given to the young male player of the year) and being named in the A-League team of the season. The highlight of his season was a brace scored against local rivals Melbourne Victory, who City defeated 6-0.
Metcalfe made his international debut for Australia on 7 June 2021 against Chinese Taipei, becoming the 611th man to play for the Socceroos. The Australian travelled to the World Cup qualifiers in Kuwait City to compete in the Group B stage. In his debut match, Australia thrashed opponents Chinese Taipei 5-1.
He played a total of 118 minutes for Australia throughout the tournament, spread across two games. Although not being selected for the eventual FIFA World Cup, his contribution on the road to the tournament was evident.
His performances were recognised internationally in 2022 when Metcalfe moved to FC St.Pauli in the German Bundesliga 2, playing alongside fellow Socceroo Jackson Irvine.
Metcalfe made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, where he would feature in the starting 11 for all three of Australia's games. Including their impressive performances against Argentina and Spain.
