Christopher's Story

Growing up on the Sunshine Coast in QLD's south east, Chris Spring was a talented athlete, specifically in the 100m sprint. By the beginning of 2006, Spring had qualified for the National Championships which doubled as the Commonwealth Games qualifiers. Spring drew a tough heat alongside Australian record holder Patrick Johnson and was run out of the heats. Following this disappointment, Spring moved to Calgary, Canada on a one year working visa and got hooked on bobsleigh after watching the Canadian National Championships. He had his first international competition in January 2008, producing a top 10 performance in the America's Cup in Calgary. Just 10 months later he was on the podium with two bronze medals from the same competition. Chris recently found form again, taking bronze in the America's Cup at the same Calgary course and then again at Lake Placid later that month. Making his Olympic debut in Vancouver at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Spring piloted the AUS1 sled with crewman Duncan Harvey. In a training run prior to competition, Spring and Harvey crashed causing Harvey to experience problems with his back for the following days and Spring to complete his training with teammate Anthony Ryan. Harvey recovered to compete in the Games, with he and Spring ending in overall 22nd place.
