Cheryl's Story

Cheryl Salisbury is Australia's highest-capped football player as well as it's first female Olympic goal scorer.

It was in Sydney 2000, that as hosts, Australia were granted automatic Olympic qualification and Salisbury scored the Matilda's first Olympic goal in a game against Sweden where they drew 1-1 after losing 3-0 to Germany.

She also represented Australia at Athens 2004 and played at the 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 FIFA Women's World Cups.

After an illustrious career that spanned 15 years, she retired with 151 caps to her name, the most of any Australian player, male or female. She also scored 38 goals for her country and captained the national team for seven years.

In 2019, Salisbury was recognised for her achievements by becoming the first woman footballer to be inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
