Carolyn's Story
Born in the island nation to a Singaporean mother and Australian father, Carolyn Rayna Buckle was just 15 when she went to her maiden FINA World Artistic Swimming Championships in 2015. She was part of Singapore’s squad in the team event who finished in the top-20 (19th).
At the 2019 FINA World Championships in Korea in July, Carolyn again enjoyed two top-20 results, placing 20th in the team free and 19th in the team technical competitions.
At FINA’s World Series event in April 2019 held in Japan, Carolyn was part of the Singapore contingent finishing fifth in the team technical and sixth in the team free.
After completing her studies at the Methodist Girls School (MGS) in Singapore, Carolyn moved to Australia in 2020 to study for her Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) at Sydney University. A member of the Sydney Emeralds artistic swimming team, she trains at the Cook and Phillip Pool in Hyde Park, NSW.
Carolyn made her Olympic debut at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games. The Aussie squad placed ninth overall in the tournament, with a technical routine score of 75.6351 and free routine score of 77.3667, earning them a total of 153.0018.
At the 2023 Aquatics World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Carolyn impressed in both the technical team and technical duet events.
The technical team of Carolyn, Hannah Burkhill, Georgia Courage-Gardiner, Kiera Gazzard, Alessandra Ho, Margo Joseph-Kuo, Zoe Poulis and Milena Waldmann placed 11th in the preliminaries with a score of 200.7701 to become the first Australians to make the world championships team final since 2007.
Carolyn then combined with Kiera Gazzard in the technical duet to finish 19th out of 38, making them the first Australian duo to finish in the top 20 at the world championships in more than 20 years.
In a dazzling display of aquatic artistry and athleticism at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Australia's Artistic Swimming Team captivated audiences with their technical, free and acrobatic routines to place ninth overall on 728.4358 points.
The team’s technical routine, inspired by a jungle adventure and set to Hans Zimmer's "Volcano," was meticulously executed. Scoring 235.9071 points and no base marks.
The team’s free routine, themed around the world of "Avatar" and set to music from "Avatar: The Way of Water," showcased a powerful and imaginative display that scored 280.5521 overall.
Their vibrant acrobatic routine, celebrating cheerleading with Alvaro Rodriguez Alvarez's "Move Your Body," demonstrated both enthusiasm and precision to earn a score of 211.9766.
The duet with Carolyn and Kiera Gazzard performed their technical routine to the "Charlie's Angels" theme and their free routine to music from "Kung Fu Panda", they scored a total of 408.1053 to place 16th overall.
Carolyn is studying dental health science at Griffith University on the Gold Coast.
