Bridget's Story

1933 - 2014

Growing up in the small town of Kayuga in NSW, Bridget 'Bud' Hyem (McIntyre) was Australia's first female Equestrian Olympian, competing at the Tokyo 1964 Games.

Riding Coronation, Hyem competed in both the individual and team jumping events. In the team event, she competed alongside John Fahey, Kevin Bacon and Neal Lavis, finishing seventh. She was 24th in the individual event.

Tokyo was even more special, as she married well-known Australian show jumper Bill Hyem, in a small wedding in the Japanese capital.

Later in life Hyem bred two of Australia’s most successful event horses, Olympic gold medallists Kibah Tic-Toc and Kibah Sandstone. The half-brothers were both ridden by Matt Ryan, with Tic Toc claiming double gold in Barcelona and Sandstone gold in the team’s event in Sydney.

Hyem passed away in 2014 at the age of 81.
