Brian's Story
The men’s hockey team won its first Olympic medal, a bronze behind India and Pakistan, at Tokyo 1964. At Mexico City 1968, the team finished second to Pakistan after defeating India in the semi-final.
Brian Glencross, a prolific goal scorer from Western Australia, was a member of the teams to Tokyo, Mexico City and Munich 1972. He was selected as the vice captain of the team to Mexico City but when the captain, Don McWatters, succumbed to injury he ended up leading Australia in all the matches. He was captain again in Munich.
At Seoul 1988, Glencross was a coach of the women’s team that won Australia’s first Olympic hockey gold medal. In 1990, he received an OAM for ‘service to hockey’ and in 1991, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. In 2008, he was one of the inaugural inductees into the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame.
