Billy's Story

1993 - 2013

Billy Ward began his successful sporting career taking out the 2004 Queensland level 2 gymnastics title. He transitioned to boxing, utilising the strength and balance he had built up as a gymnast to successfully win the 2007 Queensland State junior U/46kg title. After only being in the sport a year he went on to win the U/17 U/46kg Australian title. In his first year in the seniors, Ward dropped down to the U/49kg division where he won a close 23:22 points decision to take out 2012 Australian title. He went on to defeat Papua New Guinea's Charlie Keamau to win the Oceania Championships and qualify for London 2012. At his debut Olympic Games, Ward was defeated by Cuban Yosbany Veitia Soto in the light flyweight round of 32.
