Angus's Story
Victorian Angus Widdicombe has become a staple of the men's eight team in recent years. The rower attended Geelong College and featured in the school's first VII in 2011 and 2012. After starting his senior career with Barwon Rowing Club, Angus moved to Melbourne to join Mercantile Rowing Club.
He raced in several competitions for the club including the Thames Challenge Cup in 2014 and 2015, in addition to representing them at the Australian Rowing Championships.
Angus first represented Australia at the U23 World Championships where he competed in the men's eight. The following year Angus made his senior debut, representing Australia in the men's eight.
Despite a brief stint in the men's four and men's pair, the latter of which he claimed a silver medal, it was in the eight where selectors believed Angus possessed his greatest strength. He won a silver medal at the 2018 World Rowing Cup III and the 2018 World Rowing Championships.
Angus and the team finished in fourth position at the 2019 World Championships, awarding Australia a place in the men’s eight at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Against rowing juggernauts, the USA, Romania and Germany in the heats, the men's eight performed needed to make the final going via repechage. A fourth-place finish gave the crew a spot in the final and a chance to take home an Olympic medal.
However, things didn’t go to plan for Angus and the crew in the final, as they finished in sixth position.
Following the Tokyo Games, Angus took time away from rowing to focus on his degree in Environmental Science at Deakin University.
Feeling rejuvenated and motivated, he returned to the men's eight in 2022 and assisted in the team rebounding from the Tokyo Games. Angus and the crew claimed two bronze medals, three silver and a gold in consecutive competitions starting with the 2022 World Rowing Cup II and concluding with the 2023 World Rowing Championships.
In 2024, he raced as part of the men's eight team which finished in fourth at the World Rowing Cup II.
