Andy's Story
At the age of 20, Andy (Hyun Woo) Jung made his Olympic Games debut at PyeongChang 2018, competing in the men's 1500m and 500m short track skating. The Korean born skater advanced to the semi-final of his opening event in the 1500m after it was ruled by the judges that he'd been disadvantaged by a collision between other skaters in the heat. A 5th place finish in the semi-final proved to be a strong start to the skater's Olympic debut.
Jung had a flying start to his second Olympic event in the 500m heat 1. As he rounded the corner, the speed skater's blade collided with another competitor's causing him to lose control and crash into the barrier. Despite the collisions experienced throughout the events, the young competitor came away with no injuries and hungry for another Olympic experience.
Jung started speed skating with his family in Korea as a six-year old, but didn’t became serious about until he was living in Melbourne in 2012. The following year at the Australian Championships, Jung recorded two third places and a fourth to qualify for selection for the 2013 World Cup circuit.
The Victorian skater made his World Championships debut in Moscow 2015, placing 28th in the 500m. At his second World Championships in 2016, he lifted his 500m personal best performance to 21st, and again at the 2017 World Championships he placed 12th.
