Alicia's Story

Alicia McCormack took home a bronze medal as part of the Australian women’s water polo team in 2008 and 2012. The New South Wales goalkeeper formed an outstanding goalkeeping tandem with Emma Knox in 2008. The Aussies enjoyed a pressure-packed Olympics. Of its six matches, one was decided by two goals, four by a single goal and the other one was tied. The bronze medal final against Hungary was decided in a penalty shoot-out, the final score being 12-11. The bronze was Australia’s second women’s water polo medal following its Sydney 2000 gold.

McCormack returned to Olympic competition at the London Games. The Australians opened their campaign with three victories to top their group in the preliminary rounds. The Aussie Stingers played extra time games in the quarter-final, semi-final and bronze medal decider. After falling to their American rivals in the semi 11-9, the bronze medal game again featured Australia and Hungary and it provided amazing drama. The Hungarians scored in the final second to force the extra period, however the Australians remained composed and scored the only two goals in added time to take the bronze medal, 13-11.
