Alice's Story
After debuting for the Stingers in 2017 when she was still a teenager, young Queenslander Alice Williams has collected an abundance of experience playing water polo at home and overseas.
A prolific scorer in the Australian Water Polo League, in 2023 she helped her Italian club L’Ekipe Orizzonte Catania to victory in Italy’s professional league. Catania won a best-of-five finals series against SIS Roma. Alice was the Italian league’s second-top goal-scorer, with 45 for the season.
Alice made her World Championships debut at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, where she was named in the Media All-Star Team.
After a tight 12-10 loss to Spain in the semi-finals, the Stingers lost the third-place play-off to Italy 16-14 to finish fourth.
Australia was trailing by four in the final term when Alice led a fightback, scoring three goals. But the Stingers ran out of time.
Sharpshooter Alice was among the leading scorers at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, with a total of 17 goals.
Australia finished sixth at the tournament, beating Britain 20-8 in the round of 16 before going down by a point to the USA in the quarter-finals.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics Alice and the Stingers became the most successful Australian water polo team ever at an overseas Olympic Games.
Their silver medal performance was close to being gold, going down 11-9 to world number one Spain in the gold medal match.
They got there with an undefeated run in the group matches against the Netherlands, Hungary, China and Canada with two of those wins coming via penalty shootout. They took out Greece in the quarter-finals and world powerhouse the USA in the semis in another penalty shootout.
