Alexei's Story

Alexei Popyrin started his career winning the Australian U12s singles grass court championships and also won the U12s national clay court doubles championships.

Alexei started competing on the International Tennis Federation junior circuit in 2013 and in July 2016 secured his first professional main draw win in an Italian ITF Futures tournament, by defeating local talent Tommaso Roggero in straight sets before retiring hurt in the second round.

In 2017, he reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open’s junior doubles tournament. He followed that up by winning 22 consecutive matches and four consecutive tournaments; the Mediterranee Avenir - Club Olympic Casablancais Casablanca, Trofeo Bonfiglio - Tennis Club Milano Milan, the 2017 French Open junior singles title in May 2017 and his first ITF Professional tournament in Poland F4 Futures Mragowo.

In January 2018, he qualified for an ATP World Tour tournament for the first time at the Sydney International by defeating Nicolas Mahut and Federico Delbonis. He then lost in the first round to fellow Aussie John Millman. Later in January, Alexei made his grand slam debut at the 2018 Australian Open after being awarded a wildcard. He lost in round one to Tim Smyczek.

In 2019 he received another wildcard into the Australian Open and achieved his first grand slam win by defeating Mischa Zverev in straight sets. Alexei followed this up by beating Dominic Thiem and lost in the third round to Lucas Pouille in a closely contested five sets.

2019 was a better year for Alexei at the slams. He played at least to the second round in Melbourne, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and New York – the 3rd round of Australian Open, 2nd round of Roland Garros, 2nd round of Wimbledon and 3rd round of the US Open.

At the US Open, he grabbed the fourth career win against a top-20 world ranked opponent when he beat Grigor Dimitrov. Two years later Alexei ended 2021 with an ATP singles ranking of world no. 61.

Playing as a wildcard at his home slam in 2023, he stunned eighth seed and world no. 9 Taylor Fritz in the second round to advance to the third round for the third time at this event. He ended up losing in the third round to American rising star Ben Shelton.

At the 2024 Australian Open, he reached the second round but lost there to world no. 1 Novak Djokovic.

At the 2024 Qatar ExxonMobil Open he reached the semi-finals defeating wildcard Abdullah Shelbayh, qualifier Hugo Grenier and fourth seed Alexander Bublik. He lost to eventual champion and fourth seed Karen Khachanov.

Alexei notably defeated the defending champion and sixth seed Andrey Rublev in the second round of the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters, taking it in straight sets, his second career top 10 win on clay. Together with Alex de Minaur, they became the first Australians to reach the third round in Monte Carlo since Lleyton Hewitt and Wayne Arthurs in 2004.
