Alexander's Story
Alex Lloyd teamed up with fellow Sydney Rowing Club teammate Spencer Turrin, as the duo made their Olympic debuts in Rio in the men’s pair.
After a strong start saw Lloyd and Turrin win their heat, the pair took to the waters in their semi-finals and powered out the start alongside the Italians and the French. All three crews sprinted for the line, with Italy taking the win and Australia finishing in second to qualify for the A-finals. The red hot New Zealand pair of Eric Murray and Hamish Bond, who have not been beaten in seven years, continued their winning streak to take the gold medal with the Australia’s men’s pair finishing in sixth.
The Sydney-sider took up the sport in 2003 at school in North Sydney. He joined the Sydney Rowing Club in 2009 before he teamed up with fellow SRC rower Turrin in a coxless pair in 2012. The pair won silver at the 2012 National Championships and were both offered scholarships to the Australian Institute of Sport in 2012.
Lloyd won a bronze medal in his first major international event, the 2012 U23 World Championships. He made his first senior A team in 2013, winning gold as part of the new look men’s four at the Eton World Cup and silver at the Sydney and Lucerne World Cups.
He has been a consistent member of the four since then, winning multiple World Cup and World Championships medals including silver at the 2013 World Championships in South Korea and bronze at the 2014 World Championships in the Netherlands.
The quiet achiever is studying a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) at Deakin University. He comes from a sporty family with his brother Nick a strong golfer, and his brother Jono was a champion hurdler in school.
