Alex Winwood is a proud Noongar man from Mandurah in Perth.
He started boxing as a 15-year-old after being introduced to the sport in high school and it didn’t take long for him to get hooked.
“After a few lessons I started training outside of school at the boxing gym,” Alex said of joining the Eureka Boxing Club in Mandurah, where coach Brian Satori runs proceedings.
An amateur flyweight boxing champion, he would narrowly miss out on the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, spending the next five years training and gaining experience in the sport, including participation at the last two AIBA World Championships.
His hard work would pay off, winning the national flyweight title in December 2019 which put a debut Olympic Games appearance within reach.
“I’ve sacrificed a lot over the past four years to begin my Olympic journey again,” he posted on his social media following the nationals.
“After not qualifying for Rio Olympics, I poured everything I had into this camp and didn’t leave any stone unturned, and my opponents came to win as well. But my great preparation put me in career form to win all my bouts.”
Alex then cemented his spot at Tokyo 2020 in the 2020 Asia and Oceania Olympic Qualification event in Amman, Jordan.
He demonstrated incredible resilience coming into the final round a point behind his Iranian opponent, walking away with the victory and qualification for an Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.
At Tokyo 2020 Alex competed in the men's flyweight division. He shared the ring against Zambian boxer Patrick Chinyemba in the round of 32, who would ultimately beat the Australian 4-1 on scoring and end his Olympic campaign.
