Adrian's Story

1977 -

Adrian Burnside won a silver medal for Australia in baseball in 2004. Born in the Northern Territory, the left-hander was part of a strong Aussie pitching list in Athens. Burnside pitched Australia’s preliminary round match against Canada, which the team lost. Australia won four of its other six preliminary matches to scrape into the semi-finals in fourth place. It then upset Japan 1-0 in the semi-final. The final, against two-time Olympic champion Cuba, was a controversial affair. Aussie coach Jon Deeble was ejected after protesting a disputed outfield catch by the Cubans. Cuba won 6-2. The silver remains Australia’s only baseball medal from the Olympics.
