Weekend Wrap: Olyslagers soars to gold in Glasgow, Sally Fitzgibbons wins 4th ISA World Surf Games title and more

Nicola Olyslagers World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024 gold

Nicola Olyslagers defeats current world high jump champion in Glasgow, Sally Fitzgibbons makes history winning her fourth ISA World Surf Games title and bronzed Aussie divers hit Montreal.

Athletics – Nicola Olyslagers seals indoor high jump gold in Glasgow

Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers has claimed the World Athletics Indoor Championship title in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.99m in a showdown against the current outdoor world champion, Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR).

Jessica Hull ran the women’s 3000m in an Australian record-breaking time of 8:24.39 to claim 4th place in the final, falling less than two seconds outside of the medal times.

Kurtis Marschall soared to fifth place in the men’s pole vault, clearing 5.75m finishing behind the United States’ Christopher Nilsen on count-back.

Olympians Michelle Jenneke and Catriona Bisset saw their campaigns come to an end after finishing fifth in their respective semi-finals. Michelle ran the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.05 seconds, whilst Catriona ran the women’s 800m in 2:00.13, just falling short of their World Indoor Championships finals berth.

Surfing – Sally scores gold in Puerto Rico

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Sally Fitzgibbons has taken out her fourth ISA World Surf Games golden title in Puerto Rico.

Sally defeated the defending gold medallist Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA) by 0.86 points to claim the victory. She is the first athlete to win four ISA World Surf Games titles, with her first in 2008 then 2018, 2021 and 2024.


Trailing Japan's Ayaka Furue by two shots to start the final day and being two shots back on France's Celine Boutier with just three holes to play, Hannah hit three birdies on the final three holes to clinch a thrilling victory.

Hannah now joins an illustrious group that includes Karrie Webb, Jan Stephenson, Minjee Lee and Rachel Hetherington as Aussies with at least four wins on the LGPA Tour.

Diving – Bronzed Aussies in Montreal

The first World Aquatics Diving World Cup kicked off in Montreal, Canada with the Aussie team of Maddison Keeney, Nikita Hains, Shixin Li and Cassiel Rousseau bringing home a bronze medal in the mixed 3m and 10m team event.

Maddison and Anabelle Smith secured a bronze medal in the women’s 3m synchronised with a total score of 297.60 points.

The men’s 10m synchronised team of Cassiel and Domonic Bedggood placed 4th, just 7.26 points behind Great Britain’s Tom Daley and Noah Williams.

In the individual events, Maddison and Georgia Sheehan competed in the women’s 3m springboard finishing in 4th and 9th place respectively. Maddison finished on a total score of 343.05, only 1.35 points behind bronze medallist Yani Chang of China.

2023 World Champion Cassiel finished in 5th place in the men’s 10m platform with a score of 481, whilst team rookie Jaxon Bowshire finished 16th. Also placing 5th, Tokyo 2020 Olympian Shixin Li competed in the men’s 3m springboard with a total score of 430.45.

Rugby 7s – Women win Silver in Los Angeles

The fifth stage of the Rugby SVNS Series took Aussie athletes to Los Angeles, United States where the women’s team went undefeated in their pool games and secured themselves a position in the grand final against New Zealand, claiming silver after a 14-29 loss.

The tournament saw Sharni Williams reach 50 tournaments for Australia, becoming the second woman to achieve this, one week after teammate Charlotte Caslick notched her own 50-tournament milestone.

The men’s team also swept their pool games, winning matches against New Zealand, Samoa and USA, but succumbed to Great Britain in the quarter-finals to play off for 7th place against the United States where they won 24-14.

Sailing – 15th at 470 World Championships for Jerwood and Nicholas

Nia Jerwood and Conor Nicholas have finished strong with a 3rd and 5th on the final day of Gold Fleet racing at the 470 Worlds in Mallorca.

They finish the regatta in 15th place, just short of qualifying for tomorrow's top ten Medal Race.

Badminton – Silver at Uganda Open for Aussie Mixed Doubles

Gronya Somerville and Kenneth Zhe Hooi Choo capped off their Uganda International tournament with silver in the mixed doubles competition.


Shooting – Domestic Nomination Series Heats Up

Australian pistol and shotgun athletes continued their fight for nomination at respective nomination series events in Brisbane and Yarra Valley.

At the Brisbane International Shooting Centre, Elena Galiabovitch won the 25m and 10m women’s pistol. Five-time Olympian Dan Repacholi claimed gold in the men’s 10m, with Sergei Eglevski taking out the 25m.

In the Yarra Valley, Penny Smith won gold ahead of fellow Olympians Catherine Skinner and Laetisha Scanlan, while Tokyo Olympian James Willett took out the men’s event.

In the skeet event, Aislin Jones won ahead of Chloe Tipple, with Joshua Bell took gold ahead of Paul Adams in the men’s competition.
