The Matildas have returned to home soil, hosting Olympic champions Canada in a 0-1 loss in front of 25,016 fans in Brisbane.
In a contest that saw chances for both teams, a first-half wonder strike from Canada’s Adriana Leon in the was the difference between the two nations in a tough and physical contest.

Australia started the brighter of the two teams. It took a spectacular save from Canada’s goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to deny a Sam Kerr header in the fourth minute that resulted from a pinpoint Emily van Egmond cross.
The midfield trio of Katrina Gorry, van Egmond and Mary Fowler were effective at creating opportunities for the forward line.
However, a set piece routine in the 11th minute gave Canada’s Leon an opportunity to shoot from outside the penalty area. The Manchester United forward took it with aplomb, leaving Australia’s goalkeeper Lydia Williams with no chance, as the ball rocketed into the back of the net.

The Matildas continued to push late with the support of a vocal home crown, with a Sam Kerr header from a late corner acrobatically tipped over the bar. Unfortunately for the Australians, their late pressure wasn’t enough to force an equaliser.
The two teams will face off for the second and final match of this friendly series on Tuesday 6 September at the new Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
