Two Tokyo 2020 spots booked for Gymnastics, a silver start to the Rugby Sevens, and Barty and Millman runners up in Asia headline a busy weekend in Aussie Olympic sport.
Gymnastics – All-Around Tokyo Quota spot earned by Godwin and Bull
Georgia Godwin qualified for the All-Around final at the World Championships in Stuttgart, earning an Olympic quota spot, while the Women’s Artistic team fell agonisingly short of qualifying for Tokyo.
Godwin’s individual All-Around score of 53.331 was good enough for her to earn a spot in the Stuttgart final this Thursday.
The WAG Team of Godwin, Georgia-Rose Brown, Emma Nedov, Kate McDonald and Talia Folino finished 13th – just one position and a mere 1.076 points short of the 12th place required for automatic entry to the Games.
The Australian gymnasts can still qualify further individual Olympic quota positions at the 2020 World Cup series and the Oceania Continental Championships in April next year. Find out more here.
The Men’s Artistic team kicked off their qualification on Monday with Tyson Bull claiming a place in the Horizontal Bar final and earning an Olympic quota spot allocation by qualifying seventh in a field of 199 gymnasts in Stuttgart.
It will be the first World Championships final in three attempts for the athlete who recently moved back from the United States to train full-time at GA’s National Training Centre at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

Athletics – World Championship campaign closes for Aussie team
The Athletics World Championships finished in Doha, with the Australian team’s performance headlined by Kelsey-Lee Barber’s incredible javelin gold medal.
Barber’s win, with her final throw of the event, is the first ever for an Australian in javelin at Olympic or World Championship level. Barber becomes the ninth Australian IAAF World Champion, joining legends like Sally Pearson and Cathy Freeman.
A slew of final appearances and personal bests across the team offered encouraging signs in the biggest track and field meet before Tokyo 2020.
Bendere Oboya (400m), Ellie Pashley (10 000m) and Genevieve Gregson (Steeplechase) also achieved Tokyo 2020 A-qualifying times in Doha.
Boxing – Aussie women in action at World Champs
Australia’s best boxers are taking on the world at the AIBA Women’s World Championships, in Ulan-Ude, Russia.
In Day 3 results, Caitlin Parker won a unanimous decision against France’s Davina Michel in 75kg division, while Skye Nicolson went down to Asian Champion Yu-Ting Lin in 57kg class.
Rugby – Silver start to season for Women’s Sevens
Australia has claimed silver in Colorado at the World Sevens opening round after falling to the hosts USA in the Cup Final.
The Aussies were starved of possession in the decider, forced to defend for the majority of the second half as the USA laid on four tries to one to claim the first tournament of the new HSBC Women’s World Sevens Series season in emphatic fashion.
Earlier in the day, the Australians dominated their Cup Quarter Final and Semi Final opponents Russia and France, scoring 78 unanswered points across both matches.
Emma Tonegato and Cassie Staples each scored doubles in the 38-0 rout of Russia in the Quarter Final, while Tonegato added another brace alongside a rampant Ellia Green in the 40-0 demolition of France in the Semi Final.
The Series will take a two-month hiatus now before the second event in Dubai from December 5-7, which will also mark the beginning of the 2019/20 Men’s World Series.

Osaka triumphed 3-6 6-3 6-2, in what was Barty’s fifth final of the year.
In Tokyo, John Millman’s gallant run to the Tokyo Cup final was ended by Novak Djokovic, 6-3, 6-2.
After saving three match points in his first-round qualifying win over Bradley Klahn, Millman went on to win six straight matches to reach his first ATP 500-level final. The 30-year-old Australian, playing in his second ATP final and going for his first tour-level title, found world number one Djokovic too strong at the final hurdle.
