Australia’s Billie Jean King Cup tennis team carried significant momentum right through to the final and made the nation proud, while the Matildas’ 4-0 win was their largest ever against a top-five nation to highlight the weekend action in Olympic sports.
Tennis
The Australian team of Ajla Tomljanovic, Storm Sanders, Sam Stosur, Ellen Perez and Priscilla Hon in the Billie Jean King Cup played excellent tennis to reach the final in Glasgow, Scotland – falling short of the title against Switzerland.
It was only the third time in the past 30 years that Australia had qualified for the final.

Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann needed all three sets to knock off Storm 6-3 4-6 6-3, which put Australia’s top-ranked singles woman Ajla in a must-win situation against world no.12 Belinda Bencic but lost 6-2 6-1.
However, it was a remarkable Aussie performance to beat the host nation Great Britain in the semis.

Storm won her singles match against Heather Watson 6-4 7-6(3), the third time she’d beaten a higher-ranked opponent this week.
Then in the doubles she combined with Sam Stosur to edge out the British pair Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls 7-6(1) 6-7(5) [10-6].
In more tennis action, Nick Kyrgios and Thanasis Kokkinakis team up in the ATP Finals doubles tonight at 9:30pm AEDT against top seeds Neal Skupski (GBR) and Wesley Koolhof (NED).
Football
The Matildas returned to Melbourne with a 4-0 win over world no. 2 Sweden, the highest-ranked nation Australia has defeated since the United States in 2017.
Two goals to player of the match Caitlin Foord, with one each for Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler, secured victory in front of 22,065 fans.
This occasion also marked dual Olympian Clare Polkinghorne’s 150th match for Australia, in a game where three second-half goals put the result beyond doubt.
The Matildas are back in action tonight on the Central Coast, playing their last friendly match of the year against Thailand at 7:30pm AEDT.
Short Track Speed Skating
Beijing 2022 short track speed skater Brendan Corey has beaten his Australian Record time in the 500m, finishing in 40.192 seconds to place 5th at the Four Continents Short Track Championships in Salt Lake City, USA.
It beats the time he set in September this year in World Cup trials (40.809s) and at the Beijing 2022 Olympics (41.097s).
Basketball
The Boomers have punched their ticket for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, qualifying with a 97-50 win over Kazakhstan in the Asian Qualifiers.
Cycling – BMX
Logan Martin has come away from the 2022 Urban Cycling World Championships with a sixth-place finish in the men’s BMX park final.
The Tokyo 2020 gold medallist qualified first for the final, but a string of flat tire situations limited his potential in the final.
He is set to return to Australia to compete in the upcoming BMX Freestyle World Cup Olympic qualifier event on the Gold Coast from 9th-11th December.
