Volleyballers go down in five-setter with Canada
Australia’s chances of qualifying for the men’s volleyball competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics has become a little harder, after the Volleyroos were beaten 3-2 by Canada in an epic match in Tokyo on Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL: Australia’s chances of qualifying for the men’s volleyball competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics has become a little harder, after the Volleyroos were beaten 3-2 by Canada in an epic match in Tokyo on Tuesday.

After starting slowly and losing the opening set 19-25, the helloworld Volleyroos fought back to take the next two sets 26-24, 25-20 and looked in control of the match.

Volleyroos veteran Nathan Roberts, captain Tom Edgar and former captain Aidan Zingel were the backbone for a strong Australian recovery, with Libero Luke Perry standing strong in the face of a powerful Canadian service game.

The fourth set went down to the wire, with Australia saving five set points before losing 27-29.

Edgar was continuing to perform strongly for Australia, but the Canadians once again got on top through the power serving of Nicholas Hoag (seven aces) and Gavin Schmitt (four aces), Australia eventually losing the fifth and deciding set 11-15.

Edgar finished with a game-high 31 points for Australia, with Zingel finishing with four blocks.

The result leaves Australia with one win and two losses after the opening three matches, and with a match against current World League champions, France, on Wednesday.
