The dynamic action of the women’s 3x3 Basketball is set to light up the open arena of La Concorde, with the urban setting blending the sport with the culture of the city itself.
Offering a fresh exhilarating take on traditional basketball, characterised by its rapid gameplay, smaller teams and intimate, engaging atmosphere. The game relies on the ability of its athletes to read plays and make quick decisions.
For the Australian team of Alex Wilson, Anneli Maley, Lauren Mansfield and Marena Whittle, it’s an aspect of the game that they pride themselves on.
“It really speaks to our team chemistry, that and the pace of the game,” Marena said.
“It’s really the strategy that gets you across the line.”
Lauren, who plays as a point guard on the half court of 3x3, echoed Marena’s sentiments on the physicality of the game.
“Everything is just really aggressive compared, so you've got to make quick decisions,” Lauren said.
“I love being able to read and call different plays and read what the other teams are doing, so it's really fun for me.”
It’s the pace of the game that will be on full display when the team takes to the court, with the electrifying crowd sure to provide a welcome boost to the uniquely urban arena.
“What's really cool is where we're playing and it's gonna be a crazy, cool atmosphere,” Lauren said.
“We're very excited to be in that atmosphere, and it's a really exciting read of basketball. We can't wait to showcase it.”
The inaugural participation of the Australian team in 3x3 Basketball at the Paris Games marks a historic moment for the sport in the country.
"I'm really excited that we're here making history as the first Aussie team to ever play in the 3x3 Basketball," Lauren said.
“Hopefully, Australia falls in love with the game.”
The Australian Women’s 3x3 Basketball team open their campaign against Canada on 30 July.
