The Matildas Olympic campaign came to a disappointing close at the end of the pool round, after they recorded one win and two losses in their group.

Their opening match saw them take on world number four Germany at the Stade de Marseille, where they were defeated 3-0 despite a positive start.

However, the team wasn’t deterred, staging a nail-biting second-half comeback to defeat Zambia 6-5 in a pulsating second group match at the Stade de Nice.

The sole win for the Matilda’s came off the back of a 90th minute match winner from Michelle Heyman, who came off the bench to give Australia the crucial three points.

Their final match of the pool rounds saw the women take on the USA, needing either a win or a draw in order to progress to the quarter-finals.

The Australians fought back hard in the second half with strong attacking runs to almost clinch a draw in injury time, however the 2-1 win ultimately went to USA, with other results in the notably tough pool ultimately seeing them out of the Paris Games.
