The Opals take home bronze and create history for Lauren Jackson, while the Boomers finish their campaign with pride.
The Australian Women catapulted into the quarter-finals of the women's basketball tournament after a 79-72 win over hosts France. Their victory over previously-undefeated France capped off a rollercoaster group stage that started with a shock loss to Nigeria before defeating Canada.
A quarter-final win over Serbia set up a tantalising semi-final match against the USA, with the US defeating 85-64 to send the Opals to the bronze medal match against Belgium.
The bronze medal match, decided on the final day of competition for Paris 2024, was an exceptional one, which saw Australia take the win 85-81, with a masterclass from Ezi Magbegor ensuring the Opals stood on the podium at the end of it all.
Bronze is the Opals' third at the Olympics, to go with three silver medals and comes after back-to-back quarter-final exits. Additionally, it was Lauren Jackson’s fifth Olympic medal from five Games, after winning silver in Sydney (2000), Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008) as well as bronze in London.
Meanwhile the Boomers gave themselves every chance to advance beyond the quarter-finals, going down to a Nikola Jokic-led Serbian team 95-90 in overtime.
Their campaign featured a blend of highly-experienced campaigners and new talent as Josh Giddey, Dyson Daniels, Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay contributed in every game of the tournament.
Brian Goorjian completed his tenure as coach of the Boomers, having taken the national team to four Olympic Games and a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
