Australia’s Olympic athletes have elected six new members to the AOC Athletes’ Commission after voting at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The newly elected members are Georgia Baker (Cycling), Sally Fitzgibbons (Surfing) Joshua Hicks (Rowing), Henry Hutchison (Rugby), Anabelle Smith (Diving) and Alyce Wood (Canoe Sprint).

Re-elected members are Andrew Charter (Hockey) and Rowie Webster (Water Polo).

Jess Fox retains her position on the Commission by virtue of her IOC Athletes’ Commission role, as does Ken Wallace as chair of the ONOC Athletes’ Commission. (Oceania National Olympic Committees). Cate Campbell, the current Chair, did not seek reelection.

Winter Olympians Brodie Summers and Greta Small continue through to the next Winter Games, when fresh elections will take place.

Two Indigenous positions on the Commission will be appointed when the AOC Executive meets in September 2024. Those positions have previously been held by Alex Winwood (Boxing) and Taliqua Clancy (Beach Volleyball).

The 12-member Committee will comprise six women and six men, including the two Indigenous positions.

AOC President Ian Chesterman congratulated the new members.

“We had such an engaged group of athletes here in Paris and the voting turnout was excellent with six new members elected and two re-elected.

“The input for the current Committee has assisted us to put the best possible environment into place for this Paris campaign and I cannot thank them enough. The athlete voice sits at the heart of any successful Team.

“From the high-performance environment within our allotment, the design of our Team village and competition wear, our sustainability measures – even the process to produce our Team song sung by Jess Mauboy – the Commission was fully engaged and contributing.

“The Australian Olympic Committee is absolutely committed to athletes having a voice as represented by our Athletes’ Commission. They are a highly valued source of advice to me as President and to our Executive.

“I would like that thank Cate Campbell for her contribution and leadership throughout this period.

“She ensured Olympians were informed of the Commissions’ deliberations and maintained the strong connection established with the AOC’s Indigenous Advisory Committee.

“I also wish Cate all the very best following her retirement from a stellar career in the pool.

Cate Campell says it was her goal to listen during her period as Commission Chair.

“Getting feedback from athletes and Olympians has been essential for the Athletes’ Commission to do its job.

“I wish the new members all the very best and their fresh ideas and energy will really help the Commission provide the best advice to the AOC Executive.

“Importantly, the Commission retains the valuable experience of Ken Wallace, Jess Fox, Rowie Webster and Andrew Charter.

“After such a successful Games in Paris, I am sure the new Commission will grasp a new set of opportunities ahead with Milano-Cortina in 2026 and Los Angeles 2028 where Australia’s athletes can be heard, contribute and perform to the highest standard.

“It was such an honour to chair the Commission, and I am extremely grateful to have had the incredible support of Ken Wallace as Deputy Chair and that of each of the Commission members,” she said.

A new Commission Chair will be elected when the group meets next month.
