Interim Qantas Australian rugby sevens men's Head Coach Tim Walsh has admitted he is facing a selection dilemma for the Rio 2016 Regional Olympic Qualifier in Auckland next month.
The Aussies finished fifth in the 2014-15 Sevens World Series meaning the side had to go through a regional qualifier in order to qualifer for the Greatest Show on Earth next August in South America.
Only a win in Auckland on the weekend of 14-15 November will secure qualification but Walsh has admitted he has a tough call when it comes to picking the squad after an impressive showing at the Central Coast Sevens last weekend.
"Everyone is stepping up, everyone is improving," Walsh said. "It's not going to be easy to pick a 12-man squad for Auckland but I know every member of the program - Men and Women - will be right behind those that have earned selection. It's the type of supportive program we are.
"The trip to New Zealand in September battle-hardened us up and now we're looking to hit peak performance for the Oceania tournament."
After beating the world-class Fijian club side Tabadamu in the Cup Final at the Central Coast Sevens, Walsh added: "There's nothing that quite replicates the match environment. You can be as fit as anything but there's no substitute for match fitness. Overall, it was a solid tournament for the boys with plenty of positives."
Tom Cusack, who himself impressed at the tournament at Wyong Rugby League Club, said: "Everyone has the ability to step up to the plate within the squad and it is a real testament to Tim [Walsh] and his training methods. He's obviously a little under the pump at the moment running both the Men's and Women's programs but he's doing a great job.
"We're grateful that we have been prepared so well by the management staff and they had us in great shape for the weekend on the Central Coast. The tournament was a perfect opportunity for everyone in the squad to put their best foot forward and I think everyone did that."
