Matildas captain Sam Kerr marked another historic season yesterday as she helped English powerhouse Chelsea FC to their second consecutive Women’s Super League title.

The forward scored one goal and was involved in three others as Chelsea defeated Reading FC 5-0 to retain the domestic title and maintain supremacy in the English domestic league. The win proved crucial for The Blues, who had to secure a result from the game in order to see off a fast-finishing Manchester City outfit.

Chelsea’s pairing of Kerr and Fran Kirby proved lethal in the title-clinching affair, with the pair combining for three goals.

Kerr was also pivotal in her side’s final goal of the Super League season, when the former Perth Glory taliswoman attacked a point-blank header to goal which was parried straight to teammate Erin Cuthbert, who calmly finished the attack to extend Reading’s misery. Kerr’s sole goal on Sunday was her 21st of the 22-game season - a calmly placed volley finish that secured Golden Boot honours for the Western Australian native.

It’s a figure that places Kerr as just the second woman to register 20 goals in a Super League season.

Kerr takes the individual accolade from Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema, who finishes the season on 18 goals after winning the past two season’s Golden Boot awards.

The Golden Boot was Kerr’s sixth in the last five years, with her English prolificacy now set to be grouped with her goal-scoring dominance in both the American and Australian domestic leagues.

“This [Super League] probably means the most to me out of all my golden boots,” Kerr said. “I feel like a lot of people said I had to come to Europe to prove myself and here it is.” Success in the Super League adds to an increasingly fruitful season at Chelsea’s Kingsmeadow home.

Kerr’s side had already been crowned League Cup victors earlier this season, and are set for a Champions League showdown with Spanish heavyweights FC Barcelona next Monday morning.
