Rowdy crowd halts Canada v Britain curling showdown

Canada pulled off a 7-6 Olympic Games men's curling victory over world champions Great Britain on Saturday, but play was held up by an impromptu singing of the host nation's national anthem.

The majority of the 5000 crowd inside the Vancouver Olympic Centre belted out 'O Canada' as the round-robin match became increasingly tense.

"Wasn't that something? We just let it happen and it was in tune and 5000 strong singing. It's something you remember for the rest of your life," said Canada captain Kevin Martin.

British skipper David Murdoch praised the crowd despite his team's defeat.

"It was hilarious. It's not something you'll ever see ever again. It was great to see. Fortunately, we both had enough time to take a pause and let it continue," said the Scotsman.

In the other evening matches, France beat Sweden 5-4, and Switzerland defeated China 9-5. In the morning session, Norway topped Denmark to keep sole possession of second place in the standings, the United States defeated Sweden 8-7, and Germany beat France 9-4.

With three rounds remaining in the 9 round round-robin stage of the tournament Canada are still undefeated, followed by Norway (5-1), Switzerland (4-2) Great Britain, Germany and Sweden (all 3-3).

France, USA (both 2-4), China and Denmark (both 1-5) all have a tough road ahead of them if they are going to have a shot at qualification for the semi finals.
