Looking to return to the podium, Paris 2024 will be an historic Games with Charlotte Caslick, Sharni Smale, Nick Malouf, and Henry Hutchison becoming the first players to become three-time Olympians in Rugby Sevens for Australia.

Overview

Looking to improve on their fifth-place finish in Tokyo, the Women’s Rugby Sevens Team is an exciting mix of veterans and fresh faces.

Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallists Charlotte Caslick and Sharni Smale return to the Team for the third time. Adding depth to the team, Paris 2024 will see five debutants alongside dual Olympians Dominique du Toit, Tia Hinds, Maddison Levi, Faith Nathan, and Sariah Paki.

The Team faces a tough group of opponents in their Pool B matches, with South Africa, Great Britain, and Ireland standing between them and a quarter-final berth.

On the Men’s Team, Nick Malouf and Henry Hutchison join the three-time Olympian club. The side has a strong mix of new and familiar talent, with Tokyo Olympians Nathan Lawson, Maurice Longbottom, and Dietrich Roache returning for their second Games and seven debutants on the roster.

In Paris’ Stade de France, the Australian men will face off against Samoa, Kenya, and Argentina.

The women’s team enters Paris as the reigning World Series champions, after a nail-biting victory in the semi-final against New Zealand before defeating France to win last month’s World Series final.

The men’s team tasted podium success recently at the Cape Town and Perth legs of the World Series with a further top-two finishes.

Ones to Watch

Australia

At the peak of his career, Nick will be aiming to help his team to a podium finish. Having led the team at the Rugby Sevens World Cup, Nick is known for being a playmaker and will be essential to Aussie success.

International

The women will face strong contest from Tokyo gold medallists, New Zealand. Whilst reigning Olympic champions in the men’s competition, Fiji should continue to be a threat to Australian success.

Sport Format

The Olympic rugby sevens competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games consists of women's and men's events. Each event consists of a pool round and knockout phases. The 12 competing teams in each event are placed into three pools of four teams, with a round-robin format.

Match points are awarded to both teams after each pool match according to the following criteria:

Win = 3 points
Draw = 2 points
Loss = 1 point

Following the completion of the pool round, the schedule is populated with the knockout round brackets using set criteria. Teams are ranked in their pool according to their total number of match points. If two teams have equal total match points, the winner of the match between those two teams will be ranked higher.

If three or four teams have equal total match points, the following criteria will determine the pool ranking:
Points margin
Tries margin
