WA Olympians came together to celebrate the Festive season at the "Traditional" Olympians Club of WA Christmas Luncheon.
The Olympians Club (OCWA) held it's now "traditional" Christmas Lunch at the prestigious Royal Perth Golf Club on Sunday 9th December. The Lunch was one of the largest yet, with 84 guests, including 44 olympians, gathering together to celebrate the upcoming Festive season.
Fun and fellowship was the order of the day as members of the OCWA celebrated the 2007 year, and the anticipation of the upcoming 2008 Olympic year. It was wonderful to see Percy Oliver (Swimming 1936), WA's oldest living legend, and our "Golden Girl" Betty Cuthbert (Athletics, 1956, 1960, 1964) sharing a meal with fellow olympians and prospective 2008 athletes, Jennifer Riley (Swimming 2000, 2004) and Lisa Oldenhof (Canoeing 2004).
13 different sports were represented on the day, with our largest turn out from the sports of Rowing and Hockey. Special thanks are extended to OCWA President Tim Willoughby (Rowing 1980, 1984) for presiding over the afternoon's formal proceedings. Tim's Olympic knowledge provided the foundation for the "Olympic Quizzes and Prizes" which accompanied a wonderful three-course traditional Christmas fare.
Our congradulations to Kay Kemp, wife of Dennis Kemp (Hockey 1956) who won the major prize of the day, a signed Cathy Freeman photograph. A toast was made to John Winter, WA's first Gold Medallist, who passed away recently, as well as Olympism, Citius Altius, Fortius and absent friends.
The Lunch provided a wonderful opportunity for old friends and fellow Olympians to gather and share an afternoon of festive spirit, camaraderie, and a "tale or two", ensuring the tradition will continue for many years to come.
We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas and of course - a very Happy New Year!
