Sailing - Australia's newest world champion crowned plus five Olympic quotas
Matt Wearn excelled at the 2023 Sailing World Championships, with his stellar performance in the ILCA 7 at The Hague, Netherlands rewarded with gold.
It's his maiden World Championship title, a breakthrough after a run of three consecutive silver medals at the world champs and caps off Australia's World Championships that includes five classes qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics and three medals.
"It feels fantastic, it'll probably sink in a little bit later tonight when I can sit somewhere quiet and have a chat with (my wife) Emma," Matt said.
"It's just incredible to be so close so many times, and to come out with it now is great, especially with everything that has happened in the last eighteen months."
He had an insurmountable 20-point lead coming into the medal race, but still had to sail the race cleanly to collect the crown. It comes just a month after Matt won the Paris 2024 Olympic Test Event in Marseille, which sets up an exciting lead into the next Olympic Games.
His defence of the World Championship title will take place at the 2024 ILCA 7 World Championships in Adelaide in January.
On Saturday Australia's 49erFX team of Olivia Price and Evie Haseldine won a bronze medal, a best-ever World Championship performance by Australian sailors in the 49erFX. With this record-breaking performance, the Sydney-based team also secured a nation quota for Australia in the class at next year's Paris Olympic Games.

"It was a tough week of racing, but it has shown what we are capable of and that we can mix it up with the top of the fleet," Evie said.
Grae Morris, who secured Australia a spot for Paris in the men's iQFOiL, finished 9th.
Australia also receives a Paris 2024 Olympic in the ILCA 6 with Mara Stransky finishing 10th and a women's kite nation quota with Breiana Whitehead's 11th place finish.

Sam Kerr was a constant presence when Sweden played the ball along their defence, as both she and Hayley Raso created Australia's best opportunities.

Clare Hunt was adjudged to have brought down Stina Blackstenius in the box after a VAR review and Rolfo tucked away the resulting penalty to hold a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Sweden kept control of the match in the second half and doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute through an edge of the box strike from Kosovore Asllani.
