The AOC has announced a key appointment for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games campaign with Dr Carolyn Broderick confirmed as the first female Medical Director for an Australian Olympic Team.

Dr Broderick is an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at UNSW, Sydney and Staff Specialist in Sport and Exercise Medicine at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead.

Significantly, Dr Broderick is the Chief Medical Officer of Tennis Australia and has served in a range of senior medical positions including Deputy Medical Director for the Australian Olympic Team in Rio 2016, a member of the AOC Medical Commission (2013-2016), a member of the Australian Sports Drug Medical Advisory Committee and the Medical Advisory Panel for the National Rugby League.

Her Olympic experience further extends to Team Physician for the Australian Team at the London 2012 and Sydney 2000 Games and Medical Director the Australian Youth Olympic Team in China in 2014.

AOC President Ian Chesterman says the Team Medical Director role is critical for the success of the Australian Team in Paris with Dr Broderick an outstanding candidate in a very strong field.

“We are very grateful to have this kind of expertise and experience available to us. Dr Broderick is exceptionally well qualified and understands the Olympic high-performance environment.

“This is such a critical position for our Team. We saw in Tokyo how the high level and detailed medical advice provided by Dr David Hughes was fundamental to keeping our Australian Team free from COVID in a really complex environment.

“Our athletes and sports can rest assured we have an exceptional person in Dr Broderick to succeed Dr Hughes in a role that oversees the team of medical professionals who will be on the ground in Paris looking after our Australian Team.

Dr Broderick says she’s delighted with the appointment and the opportunity to contribute to Australia’s campaign in 2024.

“It’s a great privilege to be part of this team to ensure the health of each individual representing Australia in these challenging times,” she said.

Dr Broderick has also been Team physician for the Australian Women’s Basketball Team (Opals) and Easts Rugby Club in Sydney. She succeeds Dr David Hughes following his eight years in the role. Dr Hughes chaired the panel which undertook the selection process for his replacement.

The appointment was ratified at today’s meeting of the AOC Executive in Brisbane, which also appointed Dr Anik Shawdon to the AOC Medical Commission and reappointed Ms Miranda Menaspa to the Commission.
