ARCHERY: Archer Alice Ingley has bowed out in the round of 16 after winning her first match of the women’s individual event at the Sambodromo.
Ingley started the day with a massive 7-1 victory over Italy’s Lucilla Boari but was unable to get past Brazil’s Ane Marcelle Gomes Dos Santos in the second round.
With a parochial crowd behind her, the Brazilian took a convincing 6-0 victory over Ingley in what were gusty conditions.
“I was happy that I could come out here today and shoot well,” Ingley said.
“The atmosphere was amazing out there.”
While Ingley was on target in the first clash, the wind played tricks with her as she looked to qualify for the last 16.
“The venue has turned into a giant wind tunnel so it’s just funnelling straight through and it’s quite hard to pick," she said.
“In the first match I picked it quite well but then I switched targets for the second match and it got windier and unfortunately I just wasn’t hitting the middle.”
Archery at Rio 2016 is being shot at the home of the city’s famous Carnival parade, the Sambodromo, and Ingley soaked up the environment during her two days of competition.
“It’s always great to shoot at historic parts of the countries you go to.
“Archery has been lucky with shooting in Lords for London (where Ingley competed in the test event) and now shooting here. It’s always an honour to shoot in venues like this.”
Ingley was ranked 58th in Friday’s ranking round after illness that saw her on a drip less than 24 hours before the event and forced her well below her best.
She bounced back to knock off 7th ranked Boari before going down to the 26th ranked local.
The 23-year-old is now set to take a well-deserved break before pushing for a spot for Tokyo 2020.
The final event on the archery schedule, the men’s individual, will be contested by Alec Potts, Taylor Worth and Ryan Tyack who combined for team bronze on the opening day of Rio 2016.
On Tuesday Potts faces Brazil’s Bernardo Oliveira (10:31am local, 11:31pm AEST) and Worth takes on Egyot’s Ahmed Al Nemr (3:13pm local, 4:13am Wednesday AEST). Tyack then faces Robin Ramaekers of Belgium on Wednesday (3:00pm, 4:00am Thursday (AEST).
If the archers win their round of 32 clash then they will play their round of 16 clash on the same day. Finals are then held on Friday 12 August.
