Holcom steers USA-1 to an untouchable lead

Steve Holcom’s USA-1 bobsled looked unstoppable in the first two heats of the Four Man competition today at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Holcom’s team, consisting Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler and Curt Tomasevicz are well placed to become the first US bobsled team to win gold since St. Moritz in 1948.

The crew broke the track record on both runs and are sitting with a 2-run combined time of 1:41.75. Canada-1 are sitting +0.40 seconds behind them.

“Holcom’s laying a whipping on everybody right now,” said Canadian driver Lyndon Rush. “That’s a lot [+0.40sec lead], especially in four-man bobsleigh.”

“We’re right where we want to be,” Holcom said.

“We had a great day today and we’ll have another great day tomorrow.

“We may not have the start times but I know we got a great push. That’s what my guys are so good at; they can accelerate the sled down the track.

“It’s not over yet. We’ve got another race ahead of us. This is basically like half-time”

Six sleds crashed out during the first two runs, with turn 13 the spot where most drivers came unstuck.

Heat 3 and Heat 4 will be raced on Saturday 27th February (Vancouver time).
