The AOC is encouraging Queenslanders to “Have a Go” at an Olympic sport tomorrow, Saturday 23 July, at South Bank in Brisbane.
The family fun day will run from midday until 4.00pm with a wide variety of Olympic sports available to try at the South Bank Piazza and Riverside Green.
Everyone is encouraged to wear something green and gold - and as well as having a go at Olympic sports, they can meet Olympians. Fifteen Olympians will be attending.
The South Bank event is taking place with the assistance of the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council.
Tomorrow marks the start of the green and gold runway to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games with more than 30 major international sports events coming to Australia over that time.
Australian Paralympians will also be attending and encouraging people come and try a Paralympic sport.
Celebrations are also being hosted elsewhere including by Gold Coast City Council to mark the start of the green and gold runway, the full list of events in South East Queensland can be found here.
AOC Chief Executive Officer Matt Carroll says while not everyone can be an Olympian, everyone can improve their health and well-being by having a go.
“Our focus is on participation in a sport that suits your skills and ability. There are 45 different Olympic sports, so there’s something for everyone. The key is to find the sport that suits you.
“Sport can deliver great outcomes – making us all healthier and bringing communities together. This is day one! We don’t have to wait until the Games in 2032 to get involved.
“The 10 year green and gold runway already has the FIBA World Cup of basketball coming to Australia this year along with the World Road Cycling Championships and World Short Course Swimming Championships. Next year the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Rugby World Cup in 2027. There is something significant happening every year through to 2032,” Mr Carroll said.
