Greig records season best in speed skating World Cup

SPEED SKATING: Australia's Daniel Greig was in action overnight in the third speed skating world cup of the 2013/14 season.

SPEED SKATING: Australia's Daniel Greig has recorded his best result of the 2013/14 World Cup season, placing 11th in the second race of the 500m event in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Paired against Nico Ihle of Germany who shares a personal best time with the young Australian, Greig produced a strong race to finish in 35.16 seconds.

In his third competition back after a lengthy stint of rehab on a knee injury, Greig is showing signs that he is on his way back to top form and ready to mix it with the best in Sochi next February.

His 11th placing was just 0.47 seconds off the pace of the overall winner, Keeichiro Nagashima of Japan. Rounding out the podium places were Tae-Bum Mo of Korea in second and Artyom Kuznetsoc of Russia in third.

Earlier in the competition, Kuznetsoc had taken out race one of the 500m with fellow Russian Dmitry Lobkov just 0.01 second behind him and Dutchman Ronald Mulder 0.01 second behind in third. Greig was 16th in 35.39.

The level of talent in the sprint events of the men's speed skating is such that, other than Kuznetsoc, the two races produced different medallists and the top-ten in both events were quite varied. This poses a great opportunity for 22-year-old Greig, who is going from strength to strength in the sport, despite only taking up the sport a few years ago.

Greig also took to the ice in the 1000m, coming 19th in a time of 1:10.47.

Defending Olympic Champion from the last two Games, Shani Davis of the USA, took out the race in 1:08.66.

The final World Cup of the season will take place in Berlin, Germany from 6 - 8 December where Greig will look to get another top-level competition under his belt before the Winter Olympics.
